We Love the Environment

Even as a small business, we aim to minimise our impact on the environment.
Here's how.

Our product

Oye Modern has a selection of designers who work with recycled and found materials, and we encourage you to support them! Designers such as Liana Kabel who recycles Tupperware, re:vision who makes cuffs from discarded camera components, and Rebecca-the-wrecker who fossicks for pebbles and other objects. Look forward to more as we add designers over the coming months.

Our packaging

We chose robust, solid papier mache boxes in the hope that you will re-use them instead of throw them out. If you do choose to get rid of them, because they are made of paper they are 100% recyclable. For some larger items we use standard cardboard boxes, again which are 100% recyclable. We deliberately chose not to use packaging with velvet, plastic or other non-recyclable materials.

The tissue we use to protect your jewelry in the boxes is acid free. The card stock we use for gift cards and other things is acid and lignin free.

All our invoices are printed on Australian recycled paper. In addition our padded mailing bags (for standard shipping) are made from recycled material.

We have found it difficult to find premium eco-friendly wrapping paper and card stock, but we're still looking. If you have any suggestions please email us!

Our company

Here are some of the ways we try to be good.
  • We try very hard to be a paperless office, and when we do use paper, we try to use small amounts. For example, our invoices are printed on A5 (148 × 210) sheets instead of A4, we reuse paper for notes and to-do lists and sketching
  • The paper in our printer is Australia recycled paper
  • We recycle all our paper, plastic and glass
  • We drink fair-trade coffee we get from The Coffee Roaster. We also visit Toby's every now and then too
  • Our office uses low energy halogen down lighting, which we rarely use because we have lots of windows
  • We don't have air conditioning or heating, just fans and lovely Sydney weather
  • Our hosting provider Pair is carbon neutral and strives to reduce their energy consumption as much as possible
  • We contribute quarterly to Energy Australia's PureEnergy10 program
