Style Guides »  Jewellery for beginners

Maybe you don’t wear much jewellery, or perhaps you wear the same earrings every day. Are you yearning for change but too nervous to experiment? Start here.

Beginners rule: there can only be one hero

Don’t think just about your jewellery; consider it in the context of your outfit as a whole.

When your jewellery is the hero, your outfit should be subdued.

A bold or striking necklace should be worn with a simple, plain top that won’t compete for attention.

What makes a hero?

Hero jewellery stands out. Either by colour or design, it is interesting enough to grab attention. It’s a piece that people will notice and comment on.

When your outfit is the hero, your jewellery should be subtle and complementary.

A busy patterned dress, for example, is best with a pair of simple silver earrings and a delicate necklace (or none at all!). If your top or dress is the hero, don’t let your jewellery compete.

What makes jewellery subtle or complementary?

Simple, small designs or neutral colours like silver are the best ways to achieve subtlety. But subtle doesn’t mean boring! You can still express personality without clashing your jewellery with your garments.

The next step: one hero per zone

Are you ready to experiment further?

Depending on your outfit, you can get away with more than one hero, but — only one hero per zone!

Zone 1: Upper body. One hero.

Your earrings and necklace need to complement your hair, the neckline of your top, and its material (plain or patterned). One hero - either the necklace, or the earrings, or the top.

Zone 2: Hands. One hero per hand.

In this zone your rings compete with bangles, bracelets, watches, handbags and fancy manicures! You want only one hero per hand. That doesn’t mean only one item of jewellery, it just means one hero piece per hand. A simple silver bracelet withstands a loud ring; a simple ring complements a bold watch.

Zone 3: Feet. One hero.

The same principle applies here, even though there’s often no jewellery.

Fancy manicures, anklets, and long skirts or pants require a subtle choice of shoe. But if your dress or pants are plain and simple, go crazy with the funky kicks or high heels.

Summary

Not sure? Only one hero.
Branching out? One hero per zone.
Complement your hero item with subtle choices.
